Girl puzzled by her abnormal hair growth

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality is seeking a medical answer to dense hair growth all over her body.

The girl was in Tongliang County People's Hospital for epilepsia treatment, today's Chongqing Evening News reported.

Her parents are migrant workers and she lives with her grand parents in a rural Tongliang village who would shave her long hair every week.

The parents are now divorced because her mother thought she was a monster, her grandma told the reporter.

Doctor Zou Hongbo said the girl could have hypertrichosis -- a syndrome marked by abnormally massive hair growth.

Since no people in her family were found to have the disease, her illness could be a result of abnormally high male hormones in her body, the doctor explained.

But to confirm the cause, further examinations are needed, he said.

The doctor warned people with similar dense hair not to shave or use medicine to remove the hair. This will only stimulate further hair growth, he added.
