Girl refuses attacker's apology in court trial

ZHOU Yan, a 17-year-old girl who was disfigured by her suitor and classmate Tao Rukun couldn't help crying in court yesterday when Tao denied charges of intentional injury.

Zhou refused Tao's apology because he insisted that he just poured gasoline on her in a threat and ignited the fire by accident, Zhou's lawyer Wang Yalin told the Beijing News.

Zhou's parents were also furious over Tao's "insincere repentance" and said, "If he really felt sorry, he would have cried and kneed down to plea for leniency."

Zhou's family demanded more than 1 million yuan (US$158,700) as compensation for the girl's sufferings.

The Baohe District People's Court in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province held the closed-door hearing for around nine hours and didn't make a verdict, the report said.

Hospital officials said Zhou suffered 32 percent burns. She lost one ear and her face was disfigured.

The girl left the courtroom twice due to pains, her father said, adding that she had a bad mood and couldn't stay calm at the sight of Tao.
