Girl thrown from bridge
POLICE detained a man who allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend by throwing her off a bridge in northeast China because he couldn't afford a betrothal gift.
Bi Shengcai, 33, threw his 21-year-old girlfriend surnamed Xin off an overpass in Meihekou City on Wednesday night. Though her life is not in danger, she may have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, Xin Wen Hua Bao newspaper quoted her doctor as saying yesterday.
Bi told police he was surprised his girlfriend survived the fall. He confessed that he wanted her dead because she wanted to break up when he could not afford a 150,000 yuan (US$22,000) betrothal gift and a new apartment her parents wanted.
Bi was arrested in a taxi when the cab driver surnamed Li reported the incident to police.
Li said the couple got into his cab at around 8pm, looking like they just had a fight. Bi told Li to pull over at the overpass, dragged his girlfriend out and threw her over the side.
Before Li could react, Bi got into his cab again and told him to drive off. Li fled his taxi at a toll station and called the police.
Xin's family is said to have insisted that the cash and an apartment was the only way to convince them she would be happy with Bi.
