Girl tied up for stealing

A supermarket in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has been ordered to apologize and compensate a 12-year-old student for abusing her as a thief, China News Service reported today.

The girl, identified as Xiao Lan, took two hairpins and three candies in the supermarket last December in 2011 and tried to leave when two shop employees nabbed her and tied her up and hung a sign with the word "thief" around her neck.

The girl's family sued the supermarket for violating her rights on March 19. As mediation failed, the Beihai City Intermediate Court ordered the supermarket to pay Xiao Lan 3,649 yuan for medical costs and another 20,000 yuan for mental suffering.

The court also ordered the supermarket to write an apology and place it at the entrance of the store and Xiao Lan's school for one week.
