Girl with big appetite gets help

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl is being treated free of charge after she made the headlines due to her abnormally large appetite in the southwest Chongqing City, Chongqing Business Daily reported yesterday.

Xiang Shiyu needs to eat eight meals a day, including about 5 kilograms of rice. It is enough for 10 healthy adults. She also eats dumplings and fried dough sticks between meals because she vomits after eating and always feels hungry. She has also had aches all over her body for two years, the report said.

She has a normal build, measuring 150 centimeters in height and weighing 36 kilograms.

Xu Feng, director of Yunyang County Health Bureau, told the newspaper an initial exam found the girl has a metabolic disorder.

Xiang has been sent to Yunyang County People's Hospital for a thorough check and a group consultation by experts.

Her abnormal appetite started 10 years ago although the problem started getting worse last month, the report said.

Xiang stopped going to school when she was in grade five due to her appetite.

She was abandoned as a baby. Xiang Mingtang found her on the roadside and asked his sister-in-law Zou Bangxiang to care for the child. The family is very poor.

"Though I have never met my biological mother, I don't feel any regret," Xiang was quoted as saying. "But I feel sorry for Zou because I am afraid I am a heavy burden.

Her story has been widely spread in the local media and residents have raised thousands of yuan to help the family.
