Girl witness speaks up after 5 men arrested over death of her friend

A 15-year-old girl in central Hunan Province said she was illegally detained by police after being sexually harassed by five men, including two police officers, who allegedly caused her friend, another girl, to jump from a building to death in resistance.

The girl, who declined to give her name, said she was kept in custody for a week and was finally freed after her family paid 2,000 yuan (US$299) bail to police in Fenghuang County.

Police said she was detained in connection with the death of her 15-year-old friend surnamed Qiu who jumped from the ninth floor of a hotel to escape from the five men on September 4, the local Changjiang Daily reported today.

The girl, who was with the victim that day, said she was also raped by a bus driver, surnamed Han, among the five suspects.

The other four were traffic police officers surnamed Gong and Xu, a bus driver surnamed Wang, and a mechanic surnamed Lin. The five have been arrested after the news triggered public uproar.
