Girl's charity act arouses speculations online

A seven-year-old girl has drawn spotlight on the Internet after she was seen, in a video posted on youku.com and tudou.com, selling used Gucci and Prada handbags and expensive toys for charity in a Beijing flea market.

The girl, identified as Xinyi, has been labeled the "rich baby" and "rich third generation" because she said her father was a ranking government official.

But Xinyi's mother denied that her husband was a government official, instead, he ran an electricity company with Xinyi's grandfather. She even showed the company's registration information to the Beijing News.

She blamed the video maker for distorting Xinyi's charity activity. "The girl is innocent!" she said.

In the video, the girl was selling Gucci and Prada bags with a hand-written poster that read: "200 Barbie dolls are available upon request."

Xinyi's mother said all the items were the girl's gifts and most of them were Barbie dolls. "The total value of these items is less than 10,000 yuan (US$1, 568)."

She told the newspaper that she encouraged Xinyi to sell them in the flea market to learn that making money is not easy and giving is a virtue.
