Glass and cement under the spotlight
CHINA’S State Council will launch a nationwide probe tomorrow that seeks to curb pollution by phasing out inefficient cement and glass-making industrial processes, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced yesterday.
The ministries covering environmental protection, quality supervision and reform and development will team up eight inspection groups to scrutinize 31 provinces and regions.
They will also examine the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The inspection groups will supervise implementations and close companies failing to meet environmental protection rules. The probe runs from Sunday till February 22.
Cement production annually generates 15 to 20 percent of the nation’s dust pollution, while low-efficient glass plants are the main sources of sulfur dioxide and dust pollution.
Cement and glass companies should upgrade by using renewable fuels and producing top-range products such as high-quality concrete and shatterproof and fire-resistant glass, the plan said.
During the probe, local citizens can report pollution from cement and glass makers by dialing 010-12369 or 12365 to report any defective goods and illegal production among these industries, the Ministry of Environment Protection said.
