Go home, abuse victim was told
POLICE in Beijing are under fire for ignoring a 26-year-old woman's reports of domestic violence until she was finally beaten to death.
The victim's mother said police refused to handle her daughter Dong Shanshan's case even after she showed them bruises and injuries caused by her husband Wang Guangyu, who was sentenced to six years in jail for abuse in September, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.
Dong married Wang, a company manager, in 2008. Dong came to live with her mother and said she had been frequently beaten by Wang in March last year.
Dong even cried out for help in her dreams, said her mother.
The violence got worse after Dong asked for a divorce in April last year. But Wang forced Dong to go home with him and, days later, her mother received a phone call from Dong, saying Wang was a good husband and never beat her.
Dong had gone to a police station in Chaoyang District for help eight times, her mother said. But police just told her to go home.
On August 14 last year, Wang was finally detained after another beating put Dong in hospital.
She died two months later from organ failure.
Legal expert Li Meijin told the Beijing Times that police were not to blame as they were restricted in what they could do if there was insufficient evidence of abuse.
Dong would have had to show medical reports to prove the extent of her injuries.
However, Dong's mother said that would have been impossible as Dong was being threatened by Wang not to tell anyone about the violence.
