GOLD and diamonds worth up to 10 million yuan (US$1.61 million) were stolen today from a jewelry store safe inside a shopping plaza attached to a hotel in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province, local police said.
The store was on the ground floor at the shopping plaza of Harbin International Hotel.
Police said they suspect the theft took place around 3:20am, local media reported.
Surveillance camera footage showed a security worker chasing after a man carrying a backpack before the surveillance system broke, according to reports.
The suspect was believed to have fled into the shopping plaza and eventually left through a sixth-floor window.
The store manager said employees discovered the theft when opening the safe at about 9am. There was no obvious damage to the safe, local media reported.
Police have cordoned off the site for investigation.
