Gold toilet attracts criticism

AN opulent park in southern China has spent 6 million yuan (US$879,000) on a gold and jewel toilet, attracting criticism of waste.
The controversial Nanyueyuan Park in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, opened today and stunned visitors with its rich decoration, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.
The facade of every structure in the park is decorated with 999 (99.9 percent) gold bought from Hong Kong, said Chen Ji, manager of the park. The 6-million-yuan toilet, which has attracted most criticism, contains half a kilogram of gold alone.
A viewer surnamed Li told the newspaper the toilet saddens him when he thinks what benefit 6 million yuan could do for rural education.
The two-story toilet features a glazed tile roof, 18 frescos depicting an ancient Chinese fairy tale, and red sandalwood engravings.
The park cost 250 million yuan, most of which came from the district government's budget, according to the report.
Liang Weisu, the chief designer of the park, said the toilet was is tune with the park. And it has been welcomed by visitors.
