Golden Triangle cruise service to resume next week

HOLIDAY cruise on the Mekong River will resume on January 3 after China and three other countries began a joint police patrol to safeguard this international shipping route.

The Golden Triangle Shipping Ltd stopped its cruise service in August after tourists were robbed in the region long plagued by narcotics and arms trafficking and other cross-border crimes, online media Yunnan.cn reported today.

China, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos launched the joint patrol to tackle security issues along the river following a deadly ambush on October 5 which killed 13 Chinese sailors and their bodies were dumped into the river.

The joint patrol has restored the confidence of the local tourism industry. On January 3, 25 foreign travelers from the United States and Europe will board the cruise ship to enjoy the scenery along the Mekong, Mao Guoxiang, deputy general manager of Golden Triangle Shipping, was quoted as saying.

Cargo shipping has already resumed early this month and 10 cargo ships from Yunnan Province sailed safely through the Golden Triangle section of the Mekong on December 10, escorted by patrol boats.
