Golf course destroys paddy field
The construction of a golf course in a city in southern Guangdong Province was halted for illegally occupying arable land of three villages.
The planned golf course sprawls over 67 hectares of farmland in Wuchuan City. Local government authorities found the developer rented the land for non-agricultural project, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.
Guangdong-based Donlord Co Ltd, the golf course developer, signed a lease with the Luxi Village committee for renting paddy fields and woodlands for 50 years.
Under the Chinese law, arable land is not allowed for non-agricultural use. But the project was not stopped earlier until it was almost completed and already damaged a vast area of paddy fields, according to the report.
