'Golf course' project brought to halt
A poverty-stricken village in Shaanxi Province has halted its construction of a golf course - a prohibited project in China since 2004.
The golf course in Beiyu Village, Lantian County, was allegedly built under the false pretense of creating a ecological resort and farm. But both Beiyu Village and the developer denied it.
The project began in 2009, with investment of 33.6 million yuan (US$5.3 million). The developer said it intended to create an ecological tourist resort with sports facilities - but not a golf course.
The local authority said the project would cover 207 hectares of land.
Villagers said they had been persuaded to rent their land for an ecological project. A villager, identified as Mu Jiaoyu, said his more than 0.5 hectares of his farmland was taken for building a golf course.
