Good Samaritan case takes twist

A MAN who claimed he helped an elderly woman who had fallen off her bicycle has been accused by the cyclist of knocking her to the ground in the first place, Modern Express reported yesterday.

The two sides are now looking for evidence to back up their claims.

Peng Chengjun said he tried to help the woman, surnamed Liang, after seeing her fall off her bicycle in front of a wet market in Changzhou City of Jiangsu Province on April 16. Liang's leg was fractured in the fall, the report said.

He said he called Liang's daughter but the call went unanswered.

Peng said he then left as onlookers told him he could get into trouble by staying.

There have been a number of recent cases where good samaritans ended up being sued by the people whose aid they came to, making many people reluctant to intervene if they see someone in distress.

Several days later, police asked Peng to cooperate with their investigation as Liang claimed he hit her with his moped.

Liang said after being hit by Peng's moped she lost her balance and fell to the ground.

Peng didn't try to help until she yelled at him, Liang claimed.

"He said he would send me to the hospital - I remember every word he said. I asked him to call the police, but he didn't," Liang told the newspaper.

Peng fled after trying to call Liang's daughter, the senior claimed in the report.

However, Peng told the newspaper he is being punished for being kind.

"I will never offer my help again in future. I didn't know it would turn out like this. I'm being unfairly treated for kindness," Peng said.

Traffic police looked at footage from a nearby surveillance camera, but it didn't capture the incident.

The two sides have been collecting evidence to back up their accounts, the report said.

Although the wet market was packed when the accident happened, Peng failed to find a single witness to support him. Police have taken Peng's moped to look for evidence of a collision.

Liang is now recovering at home, the report said.
