'Good Samaritan' detained for child molestation

A man who founded a shelter for the homeless and received several civilian awards for his humanitarian work in a southern China city was detained for child molestation.

Zhang Haiwen, 56, who is well known in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, for his efforts to help the poor and homeless, was accused of molesting a nine-year-old girl who stayed at his shelter, local news portal Southcn.com reported today.

Police found the girl wandering the streets, but when they suggested sending her to the shelter, she became irritated and insisted on not going there.

She had once stayed in the shelter for 10 days, during which time Zhang allegedly molested her several times, the girl said according to the police report.

Police started investigating the case and found enough evidence of sexual harassment to detain Zhang. So far it's unknown whether the girl was the only victim.

Zhang was among the Top 10 Charity Ambassadors of Shenzhou in 2003 and won the award of Civilian Citizen and Moral Model in 2007. He has provided free accommodation for thousands of homeless and helped them find jobs since 1999.
