Gossip column favorites wed in lavish ceremony
CHINESE restaurant tycoon Wang Xiaofei and actress and singer Barbie Hsu Hsi-yuan were married yesterday in a ceremony attended by nearly 200 guests in a hotel in south China's Sanya City.
Wearing a 5-carat diamond ring, the 34-year-old hugged and kissed the groom as she told him: "I extremely do."
Wang, who is five years younger than his bride, was the subject of several scandalous tales involving a number of actresses before the couple suddenly registered their marriage last November, according to the Sina.com.cn website.
Despite the couple's earlier announcement that the ceremony would be "low-profile and simple," photos posted by guests at the Conrad Hotel in Haitang Bay showed the wedding of the heir to the South Beauty restaurant empire and the former Taiwan film and TV star to be a sumptuous affair.
It is estimated that the couple spent 6 million yuan (US$915,200) on the ceremony and travel and accommodation for the guests, mostly business people and entertainment stars who arrived on two chartered planes from Beijing and Taiwan.
The ceremony had been designed by Japanese professional planners and included a reception, banquet and a party.
There was strict security in force, with the hotel fenced off and white curtains preventing anyone apart from the guests from seeing what was going on. Hundreds of guards were employed to ensure only those with invitations were present at the ceremony.
Cash gifts to the couple are to be donated to Japan's earthquake victims, Yahoo.cn reported.
Zhang Lan, Wang's mother, said that she opted for Hainan Island because it was surrounded by sea and mountains, symbols for eternal love in Chinese culture. She denied widespread rumors that Hsu was pregnant.
The couple's engagement, less than three weeks after they met at a birthday party, sparked intense media interest. Hsu, once the darling of the gossip columns for her relationships with several TV stars, was accused of breaking up Wang and his then girlfriend, actress Kitty Zhang.
Wang, famous as a "Beijing Prince," referring to wealthy men making headlines with female stars, broke up with Zhang just before his romance with Hsu.
Zhang yesterday said she wanted to express best wishes for the couple.
