Government fugitive dies after jumping out of moving taxi

A former information chief from Handan City in northern China’s Hebei Province who jumped out of a taxi and died was actually a fugitive suspected of taking bribes of 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million), local prosecutors said today.

Cui Yuanlin. 55. ex-chief of the Hanshan District Industry and Information Technology Bureau, took the taxi at 6:30am on June 30, said the driver surnamed Lu. As the taxi was going down a highway section en route to  Dingbian County, Cui punched the car window with his elbow and asked to be let out. Before the taxi stopped, he jumped out of the car, Lu said.

A local farmer surnamed Du who was working in his field saw Cui run to a truck and collapse. Cui died after emergency treatment, the Yulin Evening News reported.

Local police said Cui was carrying 47 bank cards, four laptop computers, three identification cards, 20,000 yuan in cash and two car keys.

The paper reported that Cui was involved in land transfer scandals involving 140 million yuan. But local prosecutors dismissed that report, saying Cui was wanted for allegedly taking bribes of 10 million yuan.

Prosecutors started to investigate him on June 18 and issued an online wanted post two days later.
