Government investigates pesticide-coated plastic bags for apples

The Shandong Provincial Agricultural Bureau is probing allegations that paper envelops coated inside with pesticide are widely used to cover apples growing on trees in two major apple growing areas in the province in east China.

The bureau has sent investigators to Qixia and Zhaoyuan to collect samples for tests. The two areas produce million tons of apples each year and sell them across the country, the Beijing News reported today.

Young apples are insulated in pesticide-coated envelops until they grow to the full size, a bureau official surnamed Su was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

The media reported local farmers often buy pesticide-coated envelops from unlicensed workshops to keep apples from worms and have a fine look.

Qixia agricultural department has launched a crackdown on the use of toxic apple envelops.
