Government treasurer detained for bribery
A DEPUTY director of Jiangsu Provincial Finance Department is being investigated as she may have taken bribes of at least 50 million yuan (US$7,523,200) from banks to help them get government deposits, reported Economic Observer today.
Zhang Meifang, 52, has been put under "shuanggui" -- detention imposed on Party officials to report wrongdoings in a designated place and designated time, said Jiangsu disciplinary authorities.
Investigation also showed Zhang owns seven housing properties, two high-end apartments in Nanjing and Beijing valued at more than 10 million yuan. Four of houses were registered under her name while the rest were under the name of her daughter, the newspaper said.
An unnamed insider told Beijing-based Economic Observer that Zhang main took bribes from banks as she has the right to choose banks to deposit government savings.
