Gov't asks fire safety checks in social welfare institutions
THE Ministry of Civil Affairs will carry out fire safety checks from Spring Festival to mid-March in social welfare institutions, it said today.
The institutions' use of naked flames and electrothermal equipment, storage of flammable, explosive and hazardous substances, use of water, electricity and gas, as well as fire-fighting equipment will be checked.
Local civil affairs departments have been asked to improve management of social welfare institutions, make contingency plans and establish a 24-hour on duty system.
Those in charge of the work will be held accountable if fires occur causing casualties and property damage.
A total of 75 fires killed 20 people and injured 19, causing losses of 576,000 yuan (US$92,000) in China's social welfare institutions in 2014, the Ministry of Public Security said.
