Gov't worker slaps pupil over scratched car

A GOVERNMENT worker in a northeast China city has been detained and fined after slapping a 12-year-old girl who scratched her car by mistake.

A press conference yesterday outlined an investigation into Wang Yan, 33, an office worker with Liaoyang City Procuratorate Office in Liaoning Province.

The office said a girl surnamed Gao was playing with an iron bar outside Baita District Experimental Primary School last Tuesday when it accidentally hit Wang's car. The bar left a 1-cm scratch on the vehicle while Wang was picking up her child.

Noticing the scratch, Wang came up to Gao, berated her and slapped her twice on the face, the investigation found.

When police arrived, Wang was seen grabbing Gao's collar while the girl was crying in fear.

Wang was detained for 15 days and fined 1,000 yuan (US$146.49).

The procuratorate office also suspended her from her job.
