Graduates help rural economy
SINCE its launch in 2008, 23,000 graduates have helped establish more than 21,000 ventures, creating 220,000 jobs, according to a report delivered at the Forum on College Graduates-Turned Village Officials in Nanchang, capital of east China’s Jiangxi Province.
The campaign encourages graduates to “change the appearance of villages and help farmers live good lives,” the report said.
By the end of last year, of the campaign’s 180,000 participants, 77,000 had sat on village committees, it said.
Graduates are free to leave the village program should they wish to follow a different path.
As of the end of last year, 18,000 former civil servants had become self-employed, 136,000 had gone on to other jobs, and 2,300 had returned to education.
