Grandfather dies in abandoned well but saves young grandson

A GRANDFATHER sacrificed his life to save his 18-month-old grandson after the tot fell into an abandoned well Monday afternoon in Xincai County in the city of Zhumadian, in central China’s Henan Province, the local fire department said today.
The boy slipped into a 10-centimeter-wide crack about 4 meters deep in the old well on Monday afternoon. His grandfather grabbed the boy and remained upside down, hanging onto him all night as they remained stuck in the narrow space.
A passer-by noticed them yesterday morning and called police. The child survived the ordeal, but the grandfather, who held onto the boy with the last of his strength, died.
The boy was reported to be in stable condition and was undergoing further medical examinations in the hospital.
