Grandma starves retarded boy, 6, to death

A WOMAN has allegedly starved her six-year-old mentally retarded grandson to death at their rural home in east China's Jiangsu Province.

Qiu Fenglan, 60, has been put on bail and now works out of her hometown in Xinghua City, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Qiu allegedly told police that she starved the boy to help save her son, who was divorcing his wife. She blamed the grandson for all her son's troubles and said caring for him took up all her time and she was unable to work, the report said.

The boy died on March 29. Her mother, who was working in Shanghai ,was shocked by the news and called police.

An autopsy indicated the boy died from organ failure due to malnutrition. That means he had been starved to death, a police officer told Xinhua.

Qiu confessed to police that she had starved the boy starting February.

The boy was burned in May 2005 when he was playing at home and caused a fire. Qiu said she had spent more than 10,000 yuan on his treatment.
