Grandmother tried to kidnap grandson
A GRANDMOTHER has been detained by police in Foshan, Guangdong Province, for kidnapping her 15-month-old grandson and demanding for a ransom of 300,000 yuan (US$43,900).
The 47-year-old woman, surnamed Wei, had met her daughter, surnamed Yang, on a bus at around 10am on Saturday at Dali Town. They had lunch together and Wei suggested she take her grandson with her on a visit to Yang's brother's house, according to a report in the Information Times newspaper yesterday.
But when Yang went to see them later, she found both her mother and her son had already left.
Wei phoned Yang to say: "I have taken him away from Dali. You have to remit 300,000 yuan into my account within five hours, otherwise he will be poisoned to death."
Yang and her husband searched everywhere for their son and called Yang several times, desperately pleading with her to release the boy, but Yang refused.
Police were called and they managed to track down Wei after viewing surveillance camera tapes.
Yang, a gambling addict, had reckoned that even if the kidnap failed, her daughter wouldn't allow her to be sent to prison, the report said.
