Greece extradites suspect
AN economic fugitive was returned to China from Greece yesterday, the Ministry of Public Security said, the latest success in a campaign to capture suspects who had fled overseas.
It was the first time Chinese police had seen an economic suspect returned from Greece since the launch of “Fox Hunt 2015” on April 1, the ministry said.
The suspect, surnamed Hu, who controlled a company in east China’s Zhejiang Province, failed to return home after a trip to Cyprus with his family in April 2013.
He had taken with him more than 40 million yuan (US$6.4 million), allegedly illegally raised from the public, and 4 million yuan in bank loans, police said.
Interpol issued a red notice last October at the request of the ministry, which began the extradition process after the suspect was detained by Greek police at Athens airport on November 23. Local courts agreed to extradite him.
A ministry official said China had no extradition treaty with Greece, so this case set a good example for future international law enforcement cooperation with European countries.
“Fox Hunt 2015” targets economic suspects, corrupt Party members and officials.
