Green Dam to be available
THE two developers of the Green Dam Youth Escort will continue to provide technical support and services for the Internet filtering software, though they have lost government funding for several months, one of them said yesterday.
The developers had closed the office in Beijing and stopped updating Green Dam online because of the lack of fund, media said early this week.
They will continue to provide necessary free services for the software and use their own capital to support the project, according to Zhengzhou-based Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co, one of the two developers of Green Dam.
"We are still providing services (for Green Dam) and we will continue doing it whether the government will pay us or not," Jinhui said in an e-mail statement to Shanghai Daily.
Jinhui will keep open Green Dam's 24-hour hotline service. But a marketing official surnamed Yan declined to comment whether it would continue providing software updates in future.
Jinhui's Green Dam team number has been cut by two-thirds to fewer than 100 people, Sina.com reported yesterday.
Beijing Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy is the other developer of the Green Dam software, which blocks pornographic and unhealthy information from minors.
China's Internet regulator announced last year it would spend 41.7 million yuan (US$6.2 million) to purchase the filtering software, including one-year related services, for the public to download and use.
