Green group seeks to sue desert polluters
Eight companies which dumped unprocessed industrial waste in a desert in north China are facing legal action brought by an environmental organization, The Beijing News reported yesterday.
Last September, the companies near the Tengger Desert, which stretches over Gansu Province, Inner Mongolia and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, were shut down and fined for polluting the environment. More than 20 company executives and environmental officials were punished.
But the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation says this does not go far enough, and last Thursday it filed public interest litigation cases with the Zhongwei City Intermediate People’s Court in Ningxia. The court said it would decide within seven working days whether to accept the cases.
The foundation is calling on the companies to make a public apology, step up cleanup efforts and set up a desert repair foundation.
The foundation said restoration work in polluted areas had made little progress, and some firms had even sought public funds for desert restoration work.
