Guangdong Mobile fends off charges over Moutai liquor

GUANGDONG Mobile is investigating allegations that its senior executives used public fund to buy luxury Kweichow Moutai liquor, today's Beijing News quoted an employee as saying.

The probe came after 16 employees of the company's branch in Shantou City, Guangdong Province posted accusations online that senior executives of Guangdong Mobile and its subsidiaries embezzled public money to buy the alcohol that is served in lavish banquets.

The post bearing the signatures and fingerprints of the 16 employees has sparked controversy on the Internet since May 20.

One whistleblower surnamed Ma said he and other colleagues had been invited for a talk by the company's discipline inspectors and lawyers.

Guangdong Mobile later admitted it purchased Moutai liquor for "customer relationship and marketing purposes" in a statement on May 22. But the company insisted it has strict regulation over purchasing expensive alcohols and the accusations were falsified.
