Guangdong cleans up air for Asian Games

GUANGDONG authorities are ordering polluting factories to halt or limit production to ensure good air quality during the Asian Games and Paralympic Games.

Stringent anti-pollution measures will be enforced in 11 cities in southern Guangdong Province from November 11 to December 20 to curb pollution and cut carbon emission, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Authorities have ordered 10 factories to shut down and another five to cut output by at least 30 percent.

Vehicles without a green emission sign will be banned in certain areas in Guangzhou, Dongguan and Foshan. More than 30 percent of government cars will be taken off the road. Besides Guangzhou which announced traffic restriction based on the last number of car plates during the games, other 10 cities will adopt similar control measures.

Roadside food stands, especially those selling barbecues, will be banned in the 11 cities. All restaurants are required to use clean energy. Coal and oil fuel are prohibited.

The 16th Asian Games will be held in Guangzhou from November 12 to 27 and Paralympic Games from December 12 to 19.
