Guangdong executives seized for DEHP-tainted flavorings
A court in Dongguan City in southern Guangdong Province has ordered the arrest of two food company executives for producing DEHP-tainted flavoring products, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
The two men surnamed Zhu and Chen were production managers of the Yuyan Food Company. They allegedly produced flavoring essences using DEHP, a colorless viscous plasticizer, as an additive from 2008 to this May, earning 674,503 yuan in total, Dongguan police said.
DEHP is a toxic plastic material which is prohibited in food production. Zhu and Chen confessed that they bought DEHP from a Taiwanese businessman surnamed Lai, who had also been detained.
They said they had never asked to see the product license for this ingredient nor did they do any lab test on the material. Their factory was shut down on June 1.
