Guangdong gang attack plainclothes in ambush

FOUR policemen in south China's Guangdong Province were attacked by eight men armed with knives on Thursday as they were making an ambush for motorcycle-riding robbers, Nanfang City News reported today.

Three of the four policemen in Haifeng County were slightly injured in the fight and one attacker was shot on the leg as the officers tried to defending themselves. Other gang members were seized hours later by Haifeng police.

Zhang Huiping, a police inspector in Gongping Police Station, told the newspaper that they were lying in ambush in civilian clothes around 2pm on Thursday when they saw two young men on a motorcycle looking suspicious. The town had reported a series of robberies recently.

Zhang and his colleagues went up to check these two men, but they suddenly ran off and disappeared into a crowded street. Zhang and his team returned to their ambush site.

About 20 minutes later, the two young men came back with other six others, each wielding a knife, and charged toward Zhang's team. Zhang revealed his identity and fired two warning shots, but these men didn't stop and injured three officers.

In the fight, one policeman shot an attacker in the leg. As more police arrived, the gang began to disperse in different directions, but some of them were caught by police hours later.
