Guangdong hunts killer of 2 traffic cops

MORE than 1,000 policemen are searching a highway in south China's Guangdong Province for a driver who killed two police officers while resisting a traffic check.

The driver of a Toyota Crown sedan shot Zhou Xilai, a captain with Jieyang City's Traffic Police Squad, and his colleague Huang Weijiang at 11:50pm on Monday along the Shenshan Highway between Shenzhen and Shantou, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.

The newspaper cited Jieyang police as saying that the officers were trying to catch the driver as he was driving an unlicensed sedan.

About 10 minutes later, patrol staff called police after seeing the two cops lying in a pool of blood. Zhou was shot four times, once in the head, and Huang was shot twice, once in the heart.

Jieyang police plan to mourn their colleagues tomorrow.

In the first six months this year, there were 55 reports of violent attacks on police during traffic checks in Guangdong, according to Guangzhou police. Thirty-nine people have been detained and 16 arrested.
