Guangdong lashes out at sex trade, police corruption

Police in Guangdong Province launched a three-month crackdown on sex trade on Monday after the state-run CCTV reported rampant prostitution in the city of Dongguan, according to today’s Nanfang Daily.

As of yesterday, police raided 1,228 hotels, 2,547 rental apartments, 807 sauna and massage parlors, and 465 entertainment venues. Eighteen establishments were ordered to suspend business and three were shut down. Police held 98 people for investigation, the paper said.

Cities around Dongguan also responded with raids. Authorities said police officers who provide protection to local sex trade operators will be severely punished.

China outlawed prostitution in 1949 but the social vice revived with a vengeance as the country became a free-market economy after decades of reforms. The resurgence in sex trade also gave rise to sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS.
