Guangdong number plate auction rakes in record RMB14m

THE total volume of sales at a Guangzhou car plate auction hit a record high of 14.08 million yuan (US$2.2 million) yesterday, Nanfang Daily reported today.

A total of 100 plates with auspicious numbers were auctioned. Five of them had a starting price of 10,000 yuan.

The plate "A8888V" was brought by a local businessman, who owns a Rolls-Royce Phantom, at 901,000 yuan, making it the most expensive plate at yesterday's auction.

A8888V was especially sought after because in Chinese the letter "8" sounds similar to the word for "fortune." Two bidders bitterly pursued it. Finally the one bidder drove the price to 901,000 yuan, 1,000 yuan higher than the other's offer, and won the bid.

The plate numbered A9999V was the second most expensive car plate, hitting 800,000 yuan, the report said.

The most expensive license plate auctioned in Guangzhou, capital of southern Guangdong Province, fetched 1.314 million yuan in 2010 while the second highest price occurred at the beginning of 2011, reaching 952,000 yuan.
