Guangdong official sacked in corruption probe

A senior legislator in southern Guangdong Province is being probed for graft, local Party disciplinary watchdog said today.

Li Zhujiang, deputy secretary general of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, abused his power and took huge bribes when he was the head of the province's maritime and fishery bureau from 2000 to 2009, officials said.

He was removed from his post and expelled from the Party for severe violation of the Party disciplines. All his ill-gotten money has been confiscated and his case has been transferred to the judicial department, the officials said without giving details.

The local newspaper Guangzhou Daily said Li was placed under investigation on April 27. His downfall was linked to the illegal construction of a luxury villa in Shenzhen, known as "Palace on the Sea."

The villa failed to get a license and stood vacant for eight years after construction started in 2003.
