Guangdong official to face 40m yuan bribery charges
A former vice mayor of Maoming City in southern Guangdong Province will be arraigned on June 21 in the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on charges of taking bribes of over 10 million yuan (US$1.54 million) and possessing unaccountable assets totaling about 30 million yuan (US$4.62 million), the New Express reported today.
Yang Guangliang will be the first of all the corrupt officials detained in Maoming to stand the trial. The newspaper said Yang began to accept bribes in the mid-1980s when he was the head of Dianbai County. He allegedly pocketed more than 1 million yuan every year.
After Yang was detained for criminal investigation last September, all his assets and bank accounts valued at 78 million yuan (US$12 million) were frozen by the Guangdong Commission for Disciplinary Inspection.
