Guangdong officials probed for buying villas illegally

ANTI-CORRUPTION authorities are investigating illegal land deals involving more than 60 officials who bought luxury villas in Dongguang City in southern Guangdong Province.

They confirmed that most of 149 villas in a hillside compound in Tangxia Town belonged to local officials and their relatives who bought them at about 300 yuan (US$45.45) per square meter, while the average housing price in the city was more than 7,000 yuan per square meter last year, Southern China Metropolis Daily reported today.

Hupan Mountain Villas, as they are called, are each equipped with a pool, a garage and a big lawn. Their decorations alone would cost at least 10 million yuan in total, a property management employee said.

A real estate broker said this place was beyond the control of the local land regulator because "all the villa owners are big names."

As early as 2003 the Ministry of Land and Resources issued a rule to restrict the use of land for villa construction.
