Guangdong severely affected by powerful rainstorm

RESIDENTS in Guangdong have undergone an array of inconveniences as a powerful rainstorm engulf the province in south China. Many have been left stranded with traffic paralysed. While local authorities have mobilised assistance, normalcy was only restored later in the day.

Since Friday, heavy rainstorms persistently raged through Jiangmen city in Guangdong. Cars, besieged by rising waters, ground to a standstill.

"I have been trapped here for over two hours. It was all wet inside my car. The water runs as deep as 70 centimeters," a trapped driver said.

Across the city, the flood wreaked its damage. Shops along the street were waterlogged.

"The rain was so heavy that the drainer couldn’t handle. The water just kept pouring in. It ran to the depth of my knees," said a shop owner.

Taishan city is the worst hit area from the floods in Guangdong. The severe rainstorm on Friday exploded a water pipe--rendering many without access to water.

Liao Zixiang, chief of Chixi Town, Taishan City, said, "Water supply was suspended due to the explosion of pipe. We mobilized six water supply vehicles to provide emergency needs of the residents."

But that clearly wasn’t enough water for everyone. Residents continued to show up with buckets to fill late into 10pm at night.

"This is only for my shower. I can only make do with the two buckets for tonight," said local resident.

As the rainstorm abated yesterday, local authorities repaired the exploded water pipe. The water supply was only restored by noontime.
