Guangdong villagers upset over pollution
VILLAGERS in Guangdong Province are complaining that thousands of bags filled with an unknown black powder have polluted a water source and fouled the air.
Thousands of fish have died in a reservoir in Xintang Town in an area where the bags were piled up. The reservoir was one of the town's water sources. Residents also complained of itchy skin after bathing in water that came from the reservoir, Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.
They told the newspaper that the powder has seeped into the soil and that nearby trees and plants are dying. The villagers suspect that the powder was used to fill in batteries as it feels and smells alike, the report said.
Samples of the powder have been sent for testing. Environmental officials only said it was still unknown whether the powder is harmful.
