Guangdong withdraws mildew-tainted edible oil

GUANGDONG Province food safety regulator has ordered a recall of several batches of cooking oil that contained excessive levels of a cancer-causing mildew called aflatoxin B1.

These oil products were produced by 20 local factories, including Dongjiang, Chufuji and Wugumai that produced bottled peanut oil and 17 others that churned out substandard peanut oil in bulk, the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said yesterday.

Many of these factories lacked proper storage and strict management, causing peanuts to grow mildew in damp and warm conditions. They sold unpacked peanut oil to buyers in their vicinity, the officials said.

Toxic aflatoxin is found in a fungus that grows on grain and peanuts. A high intake of this substance can harm the liver and cause cancer. It is listed as a Class A carcinogen by the World Health Organization, experts told Xinhua News Agency.
