Guangdong woman dies of bird flu infection

Two cases of human H5N6 bird flu, including one patient who died, have been reported in south China鈥檚 Guangdong Province. The other patient is in a critical condition.
They are the world鈥檚 5th and 6th cases of humans infected by the deadly virus.
The 26-year-old woman who died was admitted to hospital on December 28 and died two days later. According to the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Shenzhen resident, surnamed Wu, had delayed going to hospital until she was very sick.
Like the other five cases, she had a history of contact with live poultry, the center said.
The poultry market she visited has been shut and around 20 close contacts are being monitored. So far, no one has shown signs of flu-like symptoms.
The other patient is a 40-year-old woman surnamed He from the city of Zhaoqing who was confirmed with the virus on January 1.
Her 64 close contacts and five people at the live poultry market she visited have been checked.
Sixteen have been released from hospital after observation while the others are being monitored, although none has shown signs of infection, according to the city鈥檚 health bureau.
The live poultry market that she visited has also been closed and is being disinfected. All its poultry have been slaughtered.
Officials said the two infections were isolated cases and there was no evidence of human to human infection.
They advised the public to stay away from poultry and birds, wash hands frequently, ensure poultry and eggs are well cooked and visit hospital if suffering early signs of flu.
The World Health Organization says human cases of bird flu remain uncommon, with sporadic cases following exposure to infected poultry or a contaminated environment. It says there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission of bird flu.
In a bid to prevent bird flu in Shanghai, the city鈥檚 live poultry markets have been ordered to close between Chinese New Year and the end of April.
