Guangzhou Party chief ‘guilty’ of bribe-taking
The former Party chief of Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, yesterday pleaded guilty in court to accepting more than 110 million yuan (US$17 million) worth of bribes.
Wan Qingliang, 61, had been charged with abusing his power to various individuals and organizations in return for payments of cash and other valuables between 2000 and 2014.
He was tried at the Nanning Intermediate People’s Court, in the capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Wan wept in court and said he “regretted” what he had done.
“I’m sorry to the Party, to the people and to my family. I hope the court will give me a chance to out things right,” he said.
Prosecutors suggested Wan be given a lenient sentence as he had confessed to his crimes and returned all of the money.
The court, however, did not reach a verdict yesterday.
Wan was placed under Party disciplinary investigation and removed from his post in June last year.
He was detained and expelled from the Party the following October.
