Guangzhou crowned No. 1 for business

GUANGZHOU took the top spot in this year's Forbes top 100 business cities on Chinese mainland, surpassing Shanghai for the first time.

Shanghai fell to second place, while Beijing remained at the sixth place, according to the 2010 Forbes top 100 business cities on Chinese mainland released yesterday, Yangtse Evening Post reported today.

Cities from the Yangtze River Delta region continue to show a strong upward trend, occupying six places among the top 10, and 33 in the top 100. Jiangsu Province, with 17 cities on the list, and Zhejiang, 15, are the two provinces with the most commercially competitive cities.

An upgrade in quality and an increase in the volume and scale of local industry helped cities in the Yangtze Delta region gain huge competitiveness, said Liu Ruiming, complier of the list.

Forbes studied 654 mainland cities and analyzed 132 cities with last year's gross domestic product above 36 billion yuan (US$5.39 billion). Factors taken into account include comparisons of the talent pool, business costs, power consumption and innovation.
