Guangzhou gets observation wheel

THE world's highest observation wheel will open before October's National Day holidays on top of the new 450-meter TV tower in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a stunning view of the southern China's city from 16 orb-shaped sightseeing cabins running along a sloping track, different from most observation wheels, which are normally independent structures with an upright wheel and passenger cabins attached to the rim, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.

Each cabin is 3.2 meters in diameter and has a capacity of four to six passengers. It will take about 30 minutes for each cabin to complete the circuit.

The tower is designed to withstand earthquakes of up to eight on the Richter scale and typhoons of up to 117 kilometers an hour.

Tourists who don't go up in the cabins can also take in the view by walking the elliptical track. A 428-meter-high sightseeing platform will also be built.

The installation of the sightseeing platform is expected to be carried out from November this year.
