Guangzhou official probed for owning 21 houses
Discipline authorities in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, are probing a senior government official who reportedly owns 21 apartments valued at about 40 million yuan with his retired wife.
Cai Bin, 56, an official with Guangzhou Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau, is said to have 21 apartments, totaling 7,200 square meters, under his and his wife's names, according to an exposed personal wealth document on the Internet.
The document has fueled online speculation that Cai may have taken bribes to own so many apartments in Guangzhou.
In response, Cai told the local Southern Metropolis Daily yesterday that the document from the Guangzhou Real Estate Archive was forged. He denied he had 21 apartments but refused to give the number of properties he possesses.
He Yongchang, Cai's superior in the bureau, told the newspaper that Cai asked for a day off yesterday for personal matters and discipline officials are now looking into the case.
