Guangzhou official with 21 flats gets fired

A government official in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province has been sacked after he was found in possession of 21 apartments, discipline authorities said today.

Cai Bin, 56, an official with Guangzhou Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau, was exposed to have 21 apartments, totaling 7,200 square meters and valued at about 40 million yuan (US$6.368 million), under his and his wife's names.

He is under investigation after authorities found a document posted by a whistleblower on the Internet is authentic.

"Preliminary investigation showed most of the online allegations are true, but we still need to check facts with other departments," Guo Xuanyu, a spokesman for the Panyu District Party Disciplinary Committee, told Xinhua News Agency.

The district government said Cai earned 10,000 yuan per month and his wife, now retired, earned less. Cai denied in an earlier interview that he owned 21 apartments and refused to say how many properties he has.
