Guangzhou official's missing linked to graft probe

A legislative advisor in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, has been missing for nearly two weeks, local officials confirmed today.

Wang Yanwei, 57, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Huadu District Committee, asked for a sick leave on June 3 soon after Zhi Guangwei, director of Huadu Water Authority, was led away by disciplinary officials in a corruption probe, fueling speculations that Wang was involved in the case.

The district government refused to comment on Wang's disappearance and disclose details of Zhi's case, China News Service reported today.

Wang started his political career in Huadu at the age of 30 and became a district Party official in 2003. He was elected chairman of local CPPCC committee in 2011.

The CPPCC is China's top political advisory body and a think tank of the national legislature and government. It has branches at various levels.
