Guangzhou official's special hobby
A GUANGDONG official on trial for taking bribes and owning unexplained amounts of personal property told a court yesterday keeping large amounts of cash at home was his personal hobby.
Huang Peng, a former vice director of Guangzhou's land planning authority, was in the People's Court of Yuexiu District in Guangzhou charged with taking bribes worth over 500,000 yuan (US$73,529) and possessing HK$1.76 million (US$227,096) that couldn't be accounted for.
The local Commission of Disciplinary Inspection found a wardrobe, cigarette-boxes and beer boxes in Huang's bedroom filled with HK$2.21 million and US$20,000 in cash during its investigation, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
While admitting some of the money was from bribes, Huang said the HK$1.76 million was legally obtained by his family and himself, adding it was just a personal hobby to keep large amounts of cash at home.銆

Huang's explanation contradicted his previous claim during the investigation that of the HK$2.21 million, HK$1.5 million had been given by an investment company and HK$200,000 came from bribes.
Huang's lawyer said that Huang had worked 20 years for a monthly income of 20,000 yuan. With income from his family it was reasonable for him to have large amounts of money at home. Investigations are continuing.
